With the recent discussions about thyroid health on the forum, I wanted to share this site: http://www.thyroid-info.com/topdrs/#us

I am hypothyroid and am struggling to get myself optimized. Not long ago I started seeing one of the doctors listed on this site which is maintained by Mary Shomon a thyroid health activist. These doctors are nominated for the list by patients and you can read what the nominating patient’s experience has been. There are also a number of articles, books, etc., relating to thyroid health.

This new doctor has been a breath of fresh air. I’m now on Armour and didn’t get lectured or scolded about my weight at this past visit. We had a genuine conversation and discussed changes to my current treatment plan. It’s a work in progress to be sure, but, I’m grateful to have found a doctor who is willing to take the time to look beyond lab values to be sure I’m feeling well.

Its a good source tho it has been reported many of those dr's arent quite 'top' Sometimes the only way to find out is to go.

Pharmacists in your local area can also give you lists of dr that prescribe amour.

You can get information from www.stopthethyroidmadness.com (the site map lets you navigate the site easier)

There are yahoo state support groups that are also a good source. Not all state groups are as active tho.

This is the USA support group http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Thyroid_Support_Groups-USA/files/

    Canada THyroid suport group http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/CanadianThyroidPatients/

and this is the individual state support groups:
Latest News –- All of the states now have sites.
You are welcome to join the sites of neighboring
states as well as your own, especially if you are
    looking for a doctor.

I must say the Top Thyroid doctor website was a lifesaver for me. I knew something was not right but yet Doctor after Docter and test afer test came back saying that my TSH was "normal". After much frustration I found Dr. Roger Collins on the Top Thyroid Doctors website and he has been my saving grace. He put me on Armour medication. It took about a 1 1/2 to get me regulated. Dr. Collins told me not to be upset if I didn't ever weight less and 150 (heaviest weight was 265). Dr. Collins told me that it's really hard for hypothyroid patients to weight much less than 150, especially when they've been obese. Well...... with Erik's help I have proved him wrong. I have now passed the 150's and I am now into the 130's! So for any of you out there that are frustrated do NOT GIVE UP... beacuse with a good doctor and an awesome trainer.....there is definately hope! :lifter:

    its a good start...

Unfortunately my experience with the doctor I found on Top Docs was BAD.

TOTAL DINOSAUR! And expensive. Yes she was nice and she DID listen which is a miracle sometimes... but she didn't know what she was doing.

Whichever doc someone chooses please call their office and confirm that they prescribe based on FreeT3 and FREET4 testing NOT TSH.

    And that they scrip T3.

And now I am going to insert my favorite smiley... because I can't believe there's a BUNNY ON HERE!!!

Wow, the resources here look great (although it looks like Colorado is the only state missing which is my state )! One thing to think about also is the Mayo clinic. I'm actually hoping to go next month to Minnesota. They have quite a large Endocrinology team (43 Dr's) and it sounds like they do extensive research. They are in network with a plethora of different insurances and you can actually get an appointment pretty quickly. Some airlines even offer a discount for those traveling to Mayo, not that Minneapolis is a very expensive city to travel to anyway (the clinic is about 80 miles from Minneapolis). I'm betting they have some pretty stellar Dr's there...

They might not have an active group but i'll check again.

some ideas for Colorado as well as calling local compounding pharmacies and asking for recommendations for docs that script T3/natural thyroid.. intergrative, functional. They tend to be the most open minded..

might have wait lists.. call weekly for cancellations.

here are some ideas to cross reference (i'll edit if i find more)
Dr. John O'Hearne, Boulder CO (gets great reference, might be wait list)
    Dr. G. Juetersonke, Colorado
Laurie Grant, PA-C, MBS, Holistic and Natural Medicine, Colorado Springs, CO
Dr. Joel Klein, Colorado Springs, CO, 80903

Holtorf Medical Group is FABULOUS.. they are in Cali..

Thanks for this. I hate doctors and I feel really intimidated about all of this but I have had such low energy and almost all of the symptoms listed for hypothyroidism so I think it is time to make an appointment.

This is helpful! I'm heading to a new holistic doctor that will hopefully address any hormone problems and run other blood work. This is primarily for the purpose of addressing my acne issues, but I think will be helpful overall. I'll definitely ask her to test my thyroid. Any specific tests she should run? Also, does anyone from around Chicago have any doctors they'd recommend? Hopefully they're reasonable - having an HMO sucks! Thanks.
