Building NOT Bulking

    My issue is this: I am trying to build as much as possible in this off season, but also trying to stay somewhat lean. Not necessarily lean actually, just not fat.
    Anyways, is it possible to build with a high pro/ high fat/ low-er carb?
    Or is a building (not bulking) diet need to be high pro/ high carb? As long as the cals are above maintenance, can one still build?

    Generally yes, it can be done ... depending on how you're defining low carb of course.

    Well, I was thinking around 40grams of direct carbs per day, and then a few from veggies. I haven't worked out the details.....

    Is that a good way to define it?

    In that case, no I don't think it's a good approach. It's too low.

    I think 100g is the low number - for off days. And then add more carbs to that on training days to cover your workouts - maybe 50g.

    No ketosis.

    I only have 125 g of carbs now, and am retaining water like a mofo.
    Not sure what else to do then.....

    Maybe it's not the amount of carbs you are having but the TYPE that is making you retain the water??

    For me, it definitely makes a difference in the TYPE I'm eating. If I stick to sweet potatos, beans/legumes, it seems to help. If all I eat are oats I'm in trouble.

    I don't think your water retention would be the result of that level of carb intake personally. It's not high.

    Could it be something else?

    I know that if I eat a lot of rice cakes for my carbs, I retain even MORE water. If I stick to oats it's better.

    I have just never had a good time with carbs- I blow up like a balloon. It's always been like that, but is even worse since my comp in June.
    I am not sure what to do now.....

    I don't think it could be anything else. I go up the regular 5-7 lbs with the TOM, but I haven't added anything else to the diet. I even cut out dairy to see if that was it.
    Don't get me wrong- it's not all water. I know some is fat!

    Pinky- In my mind, bulking is bigger. I want to stay decently sized, and still build what I can.

    How is your sodium..or rather had you cut it drastically and now perhaps have added it back in or not really paid it as much attention??

    I have heard that if people go too low(ish) carb for too long they end up losing the ability to metabolize them as well. Maybe glucose sensitivity changes?

    T, any knowledge in that?

    Low carbs impairs insulin sensitivity yes, at least temporarily. Exposure to ketones over time has a negative effect on glucose tolerance. So you end up becoming more sensitive to carbs when they're reintroduced after they've been out for a long time.
